Metros Battle Playoff Bound Mississippi Brilla to 2-2 Tie
NASHVILLE – The Nashville Metros found themselves in Murfreesboro on Saturday to take on the Mississippi Brilla. The Brilla was coming off an impressive 5-0 victory over the Atlanta Blackhawks. The game clinched their spot in the 2009 PDL playoffs.
The Metros had trouble with the Brilla forward, Debola Ogunseye, during their first match-up in Mississippi, and Ogunseye again looked dangerous early in Saturday’s game. Ogunseye and crew relentlessly attacked the Metros goal early in the game, and finally broke through midway through the first half to take the lead.
Nevertheless, the Metros would not be denied. A header by Metros defender, Ryan McDonald, that went just over the Brilla crossbar seemed to ignite the team and give them confidence.
The Metros came out roaring for the second half, and tied the score early in the second half when Garrett McLoughlin scored off of a cross put into the Brilla box by Will Maddox. The Metros scored their second goal not long afterwards when the Brilla failed to clear a ball out of their box. Jeff Shields, a second half substitute for the Metros, pounced on the ball and fired a rocketing shot into the back of the Brilla net.
Ogunseye would not let his team fade quietly into the night though. As the game neared its end, Ogunseye received a pass inside of the Metros 18 yard box. A hesitation move buckled the Metros defender and allowed Ogunseye to go around him to score the goal.
The Metros had one final chance in stoppage time as a long clearance caught the Brilla defense pushing forward looking for the go ahead goal. Nashville’s speedy Jonah Powers caught up to the ball, but put his shot just high of the goal. The referee called a stop to the game with the score knotted at 2-2.
The Nashville Metros will play again today at Ezell Park in Nashville against the Atlanta Blackhawks. The Blackhawks will look to bounce back from their disappointing 5-0 loss to the Mississippi Brilla, and the Metros will look to improve on Saturday’s performance. The game will be at 7 PM CDT, and tickets may be purchased at the gate.
